The Eyton on Severn Point-to-Point Racecourse, which held its inaugural race meeting in 1923 is situated in one of the most picturesque settings of any racecourse in the country.

The sport of steeple chasing was originated by hunting men who raced their  hunters over natural country from Point-to-Point or from one church  steeple to the next .  During the 19th Century, steeplechase became more sophisticated with enclosed courses and professionally trained horses, many of which were thoroughbreds.  Today, Point-to-Pointing is still an amateur sport and is the stepping stone for many participants, both equine and human hoping to become leading lights under rules.

Eyton on Severn Point-to-Point  raceourse is located in a glorious riverside setting with panoramic views of Wenlock Edge, the best known geological site in Shropshire, and one of the most famous in the world and the Wrekin: Shropshire’s best know landmark –  the inspiration for Tolkein’s Middle Earth in the acclaimed series of the his books ‘Lord of the Rings’.

It is documented that George Bernard Shaw attended the Easter Monday meeting in 1930 and the course is also famous as a location for the filming, in 1950, of the Shropshire author, Mary Webb’s  Gone to Earth.

For  spectators,  the viewing is excellent from a natural bank, and there are numerous activities for all family members in addition to the thrill and excitement of the racing action and these include:

Licensed bar and food: including a pig roast, (Shropshire reared and bred)  burgers & jacket potatoes, ice creams & sweets. The bar provides  a variety of drinks including real ales.

Fairground: Attractions and rides include Twist Waltzes, and the new bungee & trampoline plus the  big inflatable slide plus various stalls and candyfloss.

Tradestands: from country clothing to garden furniture and equine accessories.

Tote & Bookmakers: Either gamble with the bookies or go with the Tote, operated by the North Shropshire Hunt – both of which are fully licensed
